Amundsen: Zakayev talking to Kadyrov

Chechnya Peace ForumTalks between the former emissary of Chechen separatists, Akhmed Zakayev, and the speaker of the Chechen parliament, Dukuvakha Abdurakhmanov, did take place, said Ivar Amundsen, chairman of the Chechnya Peace Forum.

Speaking in a telephone interview with the Caucasian Knot, Mr Amundsen said the two parties had agreed not to disclose any further information about the talks in Oslo, as more publicity could undo what was achieved so far.

Mr Amundsen did, however, reiterate that the information about the negotiations that he gave in interviews to Norwegian media and the AFP was accurate.

Reacting to Amundsen’s earlier interviews, both Zakayev and Abdurakhmanov hastened to deny his claim about the talks. Zakayev told Radio Svoboda that there had only been “preliminary consultations.”

  1. Akhmed Zakayev’s contacts with Grozny are as mysterious as they are uninteresting, writes Vadim Borshchev for Prague Watchdog.

It is now clear that a meeting did take place in Norway between Zakayev and the chairman of the Chechen parliament, Dukhvakha Abdurakhmanov.

Zakayev is leading the negotiators from Chechnya up the garden path. He needs political weight, and negotiations with senior Chechen officials will enhance his reputation.
