Assassination Attempt Against Isa Yamadayev

Isa YamadaevAn assassination attempt was made against Isa Yamadayev, former member of the Chechen parliament, in Moscow on 28 July 2009. Rosbalt reports that a person who came to meet Isa Yamadayev in his Moscow apartment opened fire on his host. The person has been arrested. Moscow police, however, regards the report as disinformation, yet Isa Yamadayev himself confirmed the incident in an interview with Radio Echo of Moscow.

Following the killing of his brothers, Ruslan and Sulim Isa Yamadayev asked for protection from federal authorities. Ruslan Yamadayev was killed in the centre of Moscow in September 2008 and Sulim Yamadayev, one of Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov’s main adversaries, in Dubai in March 2009. There are, however, persistent reports that Sulim Yamadayev did, in fact, survive the attack against him.

  1. Moscow’s Prosecutor General has confirmed that an attempt on the life of Isa Yamadayev took place on 28 July 2009, and has initiated a criminal case regarding the incident. The suspected attacker has been arrested.

    Meanwhile, a source in Russia’s special services says that they thwarted the purported assassin. Isa Yamadayev says the same people are behind the attack on his life as those who killed his two brothers, Ruslan and Sulim.

    Isa Yamadayev says secret services received prior knowledge that a former rebel named Arbi was sent from Chechnya to kill him in Moscow.

  3. The killer who tried to assassinate Isa Yamadayev was one of his bodyguards by the name of Khavazhi, The Caucasian Knot reports. During a visit to Chechnya, he was promised a huge reward for the hit. The killer also feared reprisals had he refused.
