An attempt on the life of Russia’s leading human rights lawyer, Karinna Moskalenko, was made in France, Novaya Gazeta reports. The prosecutor in Strasbourg has launched an investigation into an attempt to poison Ms Moskalenko, using mercury deposited in her car. She had noticed a deterioration in her condition in the past week.
Ms Moskalenko has represented torture victims in Chechnya, relatives of those killed in the 2004 Beslan school siege, and survivors of the hostage crisis at Moscow’s Nord-Ost theatre in 2002. She has also represented Mr Mikhail Khodorkovsky, the former owner of Russia’s YUKOS oil company, and Mr Garry Kasparov, the leader of the anti-Putin opposition in Russia.
