Chechnya: Vostok, Zapad battalions disbanded

Russia’s Ministry of Defence has disbanded the Vostok (East) and Zapad (West) battalions of the 42nd Motorised Division in Chechnya, said Col. Gen. Vladimir Moltenskoy at a meeting with Chechen president Ramzan Kadyrov.

Vostok was led by one of Kadyrov’s fiercest rivals among the pro-Moscow forces, Sulim Yamadaev, while Zapad’s commander was another Chechen warlord, Said-Magomed Kakiyev.

Moltenskoy said a special commission will investigate alleged crimes committed by members of the two battalions. Chechnya’s prosecutor has ordered police to apprehend Sulim Yamadaev and bring him to give testimony.
