Hackers have mounted a digital assault on several Georgian internet sites, knocking government sites offline and defacing others.
The first DDoS attacks began on Thursday evening, even before Georgia’s full assault on South Ossetia. The attacks knocked down the web sites of Georgia’s President and government.
The web site for Georgia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) (mfa.gov.ge) was hacked, and its homepage was replaced with images depicting Georgia’s president as a Nazi.
The MFA then moved its internet material to Google’s free blog portal, Blogger. The ministry’s official site is now available at http://georgiamfa.blogspot.com/.
Other Georgian web sites remain under sustained attack from thousands of compromised PCs aimed at flooding the sites with so much traffic that they can no longer accommodate visitors.
