Two homeowners were shot and wounded this morning in Nizhny Novgorod by private security guards hired by a local construction company, reports from the scene say.
Representatives of the construction company, accompanied by 30 armed guards, raided a house on Malaya Yamskaya Street. The construction company has sought to demolish the protected house, which is privately owned.
The guards began to beat the owners, and then shot two people, a mother and a father, in the stomach in front of their daughter. Residents called the police, which initially refused to intervene.
Stanislav Dmitrievsky, deputy director of the Nizhny Novgorod Foundation to Promote Tolerance, rushed to the scene. He finally managed to reach police colonel Nikitin, who took measures to halt the mayhem.
The police have initiated two criminal investigations into the actions of the private security firm and the construction company. A representative of the construction company filmed the incident on a video camera.
There are now hundreds of policemen on the scene. Rights activists in Nizhny Novgorod have campaigned actively to protect the architectural heritage in the city centre from attempts by developers to demolish the houses..
