Human rights activist killed in Karelia

Andrei KulaginThe director of the Karelian branch of the Russian human rights organisation Spravedlivost (“Justice”), Andrei Kulagin, has been found dead. His body was found at a sand quarry in Petrozavodsk. Mr Kulagin disappeared on 14 May 2009 after he went to a meeting with unknown persons in a local cafe. Spravedlivost is convinced that he was killed.

Mr Kulagin lead the Karelian branch of Spravedlivost since its founding in 2007. He defended the rights of prisoners and was a member of the board of trustees of the prison administration of the Republic of Karelia. He organised several charitable campaigns in Karelian penal colonies and called for the humanisation of Russia’s penal institutions.–lr.html
