The mother of Mikhail Khodorkovsky, jailed former head of Russia’s YUKOS oil company, has called on Russian President Dmitry Medvedev to free her son before autumn, Novaya Gazeta reported. Marina Khodorkovskaya asked Medvedev to honour the golden jubilee of her wedding with Khodorkovsky’s father, Boris Khodorkovsky, on 9 October 2008. Mikhail Khodorkovsky was arrested in 2003.
Alexander Prokhanov, editor-in-chief of the leftist-nationalist daily, Zavtra, expects Khodorkovsky to be freed in October. Speaking on Radio Echo of Moscow, Prokhanov said Khodorkovsky will be freed in exchange for withdrawing from politics. Khodorkovsky’s release will coincide with significant changes in the country, Prokhanov said, adding that the question has already been decided.
