Looking for Volunteer Application Advisors

The Chechnya Advocacy Network (CAN) is looking for volunteer application advisors

CAN has placed around 30 individuals from Chechnya and the neighboring areas in training programs in Europe and the US. CAN is looking for volunteer advisors who have a few hours to spare to assist applicants for graduate fellowships and short-term trainings on human rights and democracy. The volunteer advisors guide applicants through the application process.

CAN’s Opportunity Initiative (www.chechnyaadvocacy.org/opportunities.htm) started three years ago and has since become increasingly successful. To date, we have been able to place around 30 talented individuals from Chechnya and the neighboring areas, ranging in age from their early 20s to their 40s, in a variety of short-and long term training programs in Europe and the US. This time of the year is “application season”, when many programs call for applications and we advise interested potential applicants on suitable programs and how to prepare applications. The reason for this approach is that most young professionals from the North Caucasus have no experience with applications forms and processes, tend to be deterred by them or view them as “formalities”, and therefore benefit immensely from guidance and feedback.

Right now, we are looking for volunteer advisors who have a few hours to spare to assist applicants for graduate fellowships and short-term trainings on human rights and democracy. In general, advisors don’t need any special experience – in general, as long as you have prepared applications to college, graduate school, scholarships etc. before and speak English fluently, you already have important skills to offer our Opportunities applicants. Our current and former volunteer advisors have all found the experience of guiding someone through the application process very rewarding and tell me it is a great way to learn about the ideas, goals and lives of people in the North Caucasus.

If you would like to help a student or young professional from the North Caucasus prepare an excellent application and possibly attend a program that will change his or her life, please contact me ASAP. Right now, in addition to volunteers of all backgrounds, we also need an advisor with expertise in economics and finance (corporate and public) for a highly qualified applicant in this field, to ensure he gets the right advice on terminology and degree choices.
