Luzhkov: Regional heads should be elected

The heads of Russia’s regions should be elected, says Yuri Luzhkov, Mayor of Moscow. Speaking on Vladimir Pozner’s new talk show on Russia’s First Channel, Mr Luzhkov said reintroducing elections for the heads of republics and regions would grant the regional heads more legitimacy.

Mintimer Shaimiev, President of Tatarstan, and Murtaza Rakhimov, President of Bashkortostan, called for the reintroduction of elections for heads of regions in summer 2008. The elections of regional heads were abolished under President Vladimir Putin following the Beslan school siege in 2004.
