Mikhail Beketov, editor-in-chief of the Russian regional daily, Khimkinskaya Pravda, was attacked because of an article he was writing about the family business of the head of Khimky’s municipal administration, Vladimir Strelchenko, Novaya Gazeta reports.
Novaya Gazeta has managed to restore the text of the article, which would have appeared in the beginning of Strelchenko’s election campaign. Novaya Gazeta has asked the prosecutor’s office in Moscow region to look into the details.
Beketov, who has often criticised the authorities, was brutally beaten near his home. He was found unconscious only a day later and was in coma for two weeks. Two of his fingers had to be amputated, and he is still using a respirator.
