Russia’s Committee of Soldiers’ Mothers fears that police in Moscow may initiate a massive campaign to catch draft-aged young men into the army over the holidays. The autumn draft is coming to an end, but military units are still much short of new draftees. Soldiers’ Mothers say the shortage will be compensated by taking young men from the street.
Svetlana Kuznetsova, chairman of the Committee of Soldiers’ Mothers, said draft boards often violate the rules and regulations when there are shortages of new draftees. Any young man under 27 years may find himself in the army within a few hours. The Committee advises young men not to go out over the holidays and not to open their door to strangers.
According to the civic rights organisation, Citizen and Army, military draft boards operate the same way in St Petersburg as well. Young men not fit to serve in the military due to health problems are sent to the army forcibly. Moreover, there have been attempts to draft citizens of other states, Primanews reports.
