Medvedev establishes political police

UBOPRussian President Dmitry Medvedev has issued a decree enstating the functions of political police on the Directorate for Combating Organised Crime (UBOP). Under the presidential decree, the UBOP will be responsible for fighting “extremism.” The UBOP is known to have engaged in the violent suppression of opposition activists; UBOP officers were accused of killing NBP activist Yuri Chervochkin in December 2007. There are fears that the UBOP is turning into a death squad tasked with killing opponents to the ruling regime.
