Natalia Morari and Ilya Barabanov, journalists working at The New Times, have spent three days in the transit zone of Moscow’s Domodedovo airport. Earlier, Ms Morari, who is a citizen of Moldova, was denied entry into Russia and deported to Kishinev, capital of Moldova. She recently married Mr Barabanov, who is a Russian citizen. The couple flew to Moscow, but Ms Morari was again denied entry.
The Moldovan consul in Russia advised Ms Morari to return to Kishinev, but the couple has thus far refused to do so. Mr Barabanov said their decision depended on his wife’s health. She has developed a kidney trouble. The couple has no food — the FSB ordered that they be not fed –, and authorities do not let them recharge their mobile phones. The Moldovan consul brought them water to drink, Radio Echo of Moscow reported.
