National Assembly: “Forced religion will destroy Russia”

ReligionRussian President Dmitry Medvedev has decreed that a new subject matter, “Religious culture and worldly ethics,” be taught in secondary schools across Russia. The opposition’s proto-parliament, the National Assembly, argues that the decree divides the peoples of Russia along religious lines and discriminates against non-traditional religions and atheists.

The Kremlin has taken on itself to determine the correctness of existential questions, the National Assembly argues. In Russia’s current state, the presidential decree will serve to undermine Russia’s civic identity and “place a bomb of colossal explosive force under the Russian society.” The National Assembly demands the cancellation of this illegal and destructive decree.
