Nizhny Novgorod: Police raid Green activists

DrontPolice in the Russian city of Nizhny Novgorod raided the offices of a local environmentalist organisation, Dront, on 16 September 2008. The official reason for the raid was to check the organisation’s tax records. Yet the police proceeded to check all documents related to Dront’s activities without the presence of the organisation’s leaders as required by law. The police had earlier threatened Dront after accusations that the organisation had distributed “extremist” material.
