Opposition demonstration in Nazran

An opposition demonstration is continuing in Nazran, the capital of Russia’s Republic of Ingushetia. The demonstrators demand an investigation into the killing of Magomed Yevloyev, owner of the independent news site, Ingushetiya.ru.

Novaya Gazeta’s correspondent from the scene reported that the demonstrators had entered into negotiations with police special forces (OMON). The police announced that the demonstration was illegal and demanded that the demonstrators disperse.

Novaya Gazeta’s correspondent said the demonstrators began to disperse at around 8 pm Moscow time. However, around 100 demonstrators have decided to stay on Nazran’s main square overnight. Riot police is in place.

    Ingush interior minister officials held negotiations with opposition leader Magomed Khazbiev, asking him to call off the demonstration in Nazran, and promising an objective investigation into Magomed Yevloyev’s death.

    Khazbiev said that the demonstrators would not disperse. The organisers called on all people to join the demonstration. This year, 1 September is the first day of fasting in the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
