Opposition still not united over strategy

During the first session of the Russian opposition’s parallel parliament, the National Assembly, Sergey Aksenov, a representative of the banned National Bolshevik Party (NBP), proposed that the Assembly declare the State Duma to be illegitimate, and that the Assembly should therefore take over the functions of the parliament of the Russian Federation.

The organising committee of the National Assembly then held a meeting in which representatives of other parties demanded that the NBP withdraw its proposal; otherwise, the Other Russia coalition could dissolve. Under pressure, Sergey Aksenov agreed to withdraw the proposal. The majority of NBP deputies in the Assembly then left the hall in protest.
