Photos of Russian prison conditions

The Russian human rights lawyer, Mikhail Trepashkin, has published a series of photos about the mediaeval conditions in Russian prisons. The photos were taken at the temporary detention facility in the city of Lyubertsy, Moscow Oblast. The prison holds, among others, Yulia Privedennaya, member of the Russian youth organisation, PORTOS, seen in the photos.

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg has pointed out on several occasions that those detained and arrested in Russia are kept in conditions that degrade human dignity, which is prohibited under the European Convention on Human Rights. Authorities in Russia often do not, however, abide by the rulings of the ECHR, and continue to detain people in conditions not fit for animals.
