Police rob prayers in St Petersburg mosque

Riot police in St Petersburg stormed into a mosque and beat up around a hundred people inside the mosque on 22 May 2009. Mr Rinat Valiev, head of the local religious organisation, Mecca, said riot police (OMON) stormed into the mosque with truncheons in the middle of Friday prayers. The police ordered everybody against the wall, beat them up, and robbed them of money and telephones. Most of the victims were Tajiks who work at a nearby marketplace.
