Russia’s unemployment rate creeping up menacingly
Russia’s total number of unemployed totalled over 6.4 million people at the end of February 2009, up 20.6% from the same period last year and up 4.9% from January 2009. Russia’s Federal State Statistics Service (GSK) reported that 8.5% of the country’s economically active population are now out of a job. Russia’s economically active population stood at 75.6 million people, or over 53% of the total. GSK reported that 36.3 million (52.2%) of all working Russians are employed in organisations other than small businesses.
