Russia twists Europe’s arm over Zakayev

Russia has called on Belgium to refuse entry to the so-called emissary of Chechen separatists, Akhmed Zakayev, reported. Zakayev has been invited to take part in hearings about the situation in Chechnya, organised by a group of MEPs.

The Russian ambassador to Belgium, Vadim Lukov, issued an official note to the Belgian Foreign Ministry, calling on Belgian authorities to bar entry to Zakayev. In 2002, Britain rejected Moscow’s demand for Zakayev’s extradition. Zakayev has lived in Britain since 2000.
