Russian troops in Abkhazia

Russian paratroopers arrived in the Abkhaz capital, Sukhumi, late on Sunday evening, Interfax reports. According to a spokesman for CIS peacekeepers, Russian troops were brought into Abkhazia “to prevent the repeat of the situation with peacekeepers in South Ossetia and to prevent Georgia’s military aggression against Abkhazia.”

  1. Russia has sent over 9,000 troops and 350 units of military equipment to Abkhazia, ITAR-TASS reported. A spokesman for Russian forces in Abkhazia told Interfax that the troops were flown in to Sukhumi in the evening of 10 August 2008.
