Russia: Religious leaders call for Jihad

Russia’s religious leaders call on Russia to follow its own unique path of development and build up its military might, Izvestiya reports. The official head of Russia’s muslim community calls for an “Islamic-Orthodox Jihad” against the West.

Bishop Vsevolod Chaplin, deputy head of international ecclesial relations at the Moscow Patriarchate, said Russia needs to be strong militarily to prevent any infringement on its way of life, global interests, and ability to influence what is happening in the world. He said Russia needs to propose its own way of historical development to neighbouring nations.

Russia’s Supreme Mufti Talgat Tadzhuddin called on muslims and Orthodox Christians to “join a united Islamic-Orthodox Jihad against the Empire of Satan,” i.e., the United States. Tadzhuddin said Russia’s anti-Western position, manifest in the recognition of Abkhaz and South-Ossetian independence, will do away with America’s influence on the world arena, “which all muslims should make use of.”
