United Civic Front defends Artem Basyrov

Garry Kasparov, leader of Russia’s opposition United Civic Front (OGF), and Marina Litvinovich, member of the party’s federal bureau, sent a letter to Vladimir Lukin, Russia’s human rights ombudsman, calling on him to protect Artem Basyrov, an opposition activist held in a psychiatric clinic in Yoshkar-Ola, capital of the Republic of Mari El.

OGF’s fears that the practice of forced psychiatric internment has returned under the regime of Vladimir Putin have turned out to be true, the letter reads. In an earlier case, Larisa Arap, an OGF activist in Murmansk, was forcibly dispatched to psychiatric treatment after revealing abuses at a local psychiatric hospital for children.
