Update on arrests in Nizhny Novgorod

Ms Oksana Chelysheva, one of the organisers of a planned seminar in Nizhny Novgorod to commemorate the slain Russian journalist and human rights activist Anna Politkovskaya, told Sobkorr.ru news agency that police detained five foreign human rights activists.

Ms Chelysheva said the five who were detained are Friederike Behr (Germany), Neil Hicks (UK), Sergi Curbí (Spain), Rosaria Fernandez (Spain), and Rita Huybens (Belgium). They represent Amnesty International, League for Human Rights (Spain), and Human Rights First (USA).

The people who were detained have now spent more than three hours at the offices of the Federal Migration Service in Nizhny Novgorod, where they were all questioned on their interest in the seminar to commemorate Anna Politkovskaya and the purpose of their visit to Nizhny Novgorod.

Moreover, the police is searching the offices of the Nizhny Novgorod Foundation to Promote Tolerance, one of the organisers of the planned seminar. The police has seized computers and software licensing documents. This is the second time that the organisation’s computers have been seized.
