Vedomosti warned off for “extremism”

Russia’s Federal Service on Supervision of Communications and the Mass Media (Rossvyazkomnadzor) has warned the daily Vedomosti about the need to follow the law on preventing extremism.

The warning came after Vedomosti published an article by Yevgeni Gontmakher, director of the Center for Social Studies at the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Rossvyazkomnadzor’s statement, published in Vedomosti, states that Mr Gontmakher’s article, entitled “Novocherkassk – 2009,” contains material, which may be interpreted as inciting to extremist acts.

Vedomosti is a joint venture between Dow Jones, the Financial Times, and Sanoma Corporation’s Independent Media.
