Vilnius Conference on Crisis in Chechnya

An international conference on the conflict in Chechnya took place in the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius, on 18 April 2008. A round table discussion was held in the main chamber of the Lithuanian parliament. An official statement of the conference will soon be published.

At the conference, the discussion moved beyond blaming Russia for suffering it has inflicted on Chechnya. Many speakers accused the West, largely silent on the gross violations of human rights violations and war crimes in Chechnya, of complicity in the tragedy of the Chechen people.
