Preliminary hearings in the case regarding the killing of Magomed Yevloyev, former owner of the independent news portal, Ingushetia.Ru, began in the city court in Karabulak in Ingushetia on 6 August 2009. Yevloyev’s family demanded that the case be linked to the case regarding the disappearance of Yevloyev’s briefcase and money.
When the judge refused to refer the case back to the prosecutor, Yevloyev’s father, Yakhya Yevloyev. announced that he was withdrawing from the case. “The case has been decided beforehand, everything is going according to a prior plan, this is just a waste of time and paper,” Yakhya Yevloyev said.
Magomed Yevloyev was shot in the head and killed while in police custody on 31 August 2008. The prosecutor charged the former head of Ingush Interior Minister Magomed Medov’s security detail, Ibragim Yevloyev (no relation), of “involuntary manslaughter due to incautiousness.” Yevloyev’s family insists the killing was intentional.
